Leave a Legacy Gift to The Center for Discovery
The Thanksgiving Society, named for the mission-central Thanksgiving Farm, is a community of givers who have left a legacy gift to The Center for Discovery through bequests, life insurance, beneficiary designations, and other tools. Joining the Thanksgiving Society is one of the most powerful ways to support and sustain The Center for Discovery for generations to come!
Ways to Join The Thanksgiving Society:
A Gift In Your Will
Whether you designate a specific amount or leave a percentage of your estate, a gift in your will, will empower The Center’s continued success.
Sample Language for Your Will:
I [name], of [city, state ZIP], bequeath the sum of $[ ] or [ ] percent of my estate to The Center for Discovery, a nonprofit organization with a business address of PO Box 840, Harris, NY 12742 and a tax identification number 14-1395426 for its unrestricted use and purpose.
Beneficiary Designations
Donors that decide to leave a beneficiary designation prefer the increased flexibility they provide. Naming The Center for Discovery as a beneficiary on retirement plans, life insurance policies, and commercial annuities is very simple to do.
Start by requesting a change-of-beneficiary form from your policy administrator or download the form from your provider’s website. Make your desired changes and return the form to establish your gift.
Qualified Charitable Distributions
A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) is a direct transfer of funds from your IRA, payable to a qualified charity. If you are 70.5 or older, you can give up to $100,000 per year from your IRA to help our mission and receive tax benefits in return. QCDs can be counted toward satisfying your required minimum distributions (RMDs) for the year, as long as certain rules are met. This popular gift option is also commonly called the IRA charitable rollover.
Charitable Gift Annuity
Charitable gift annuities can be a good idea for individuals who want to support a charity while receiving a regular income, potential tax benefits, and the satisfaction of making a philanthropic contribution.
With a charitable gift annuity you agree to make a gift to The Center for Discovery and we, in return, pay you a fixed amount each year for the rest of your life. After your lifetime, the remainder of the gift annuity becomes your legacy gift to The Center.
Charitable Remainder Trust
A charitable remainder trust is an irrevocable trust that generates a potential income stream for you, as the donor to the CRT, or other beneficiaries, with the remainder of the donated assets going to a qualified charity.
There are two types to charitable remainder trusts and each has its own benefits:
- The annuity trust distributes a fixed annuity amount each year, and additional contributions are not allowed.
- The unitrust distributes a fixed percentage based on the balance of the trust assets (revalued annually), and additional contributions can be made.
