Healthy Community Model
Small Town, Big Ideas
The Center’s Healthy Community Model, located in the hamlet of Hurleyville, NY is a comprehensive effort to reimagine what it means to be a fully inclusive and sustainable community. This pedestrian-friendly and vibrant Main Street provides access to a variety of experiences and ways to connect, along with an abundance of creative outlets and learning opportunities.
Throughout the last decade, The Center has developed major partnerships with local government, the Open Space Institute, the State University of New York educational system, as well as a number of individuals and private foundations to transform the economically depressed hamlet of Hurleyville into a viable, fully integrated Main Street that includes new business ventures and job opportunities. Some of its major components include the Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre, Gallery 222, Fiber on Main artisan studios, and a fully-accessible Rail Trail. Other elements include universally-designed residences, retail and service businesses including Forage & Gather, and various eateries including a salumeria, La Salumina.
Accessible to everyone, the Hurleyville model is paving the way for all individuals to lead healthy, sustainable and productive lives. A truly healthy community.
